Woven Discs

INNOVATION
Disc weaving © is Tintsaba's signature innovation. These refined, jewel like sisal discs were developed to complete our range of hand made jewelry.

ONE - Spinning and grass
The weavers will spin a very fine thread of sisal which will be wrapped around a thin, malleable species of grass well suited to the discs.

TWO: Starting the weave coil
Using a single stem of grass, the disc is created using a wrapping and coiling technique. Here the stem is simultaneously covered with sisal and coiled to form a disc. This continues until the desired size is attained.

THREE - Finishing
To finish the discs the weaver binds the end of the grass and the sisal in a smooth, neat, almost indiscernible finish.

FOUR - Grading
Discs are then put through a strict grading process. This is a vitally important part of the Tintsaba jewelry making process. Only the top 10% of all sisal discs produced will be used in our Silver range. Market Grade discs are used in our Natural jewelry range and Craft Grade discs are rejected or used for making samples.
