Silversmithing

HISTORY
Tintsaba started working with Sterling Silver (925) in 2001. Our remarkable weavers were producing small discs of such perfect quality that we took a decision to add silver to our jewelry range.

We currently have three full-time silversmiths. Each started their careers as weavers. In time their skill and attention to detail resulted in their being selected to train as silversmiths. Now, with more than 40 years experience between them, these women are producing Tintsaba jewelry of the highest quality.

TECHNIQUE
ONE - Working with wire

Our silversmiths start with silver wire and plate. The wire is drawn through a profiled draw plate. This leaves a groove in the silver frame to hold the disc.

TWO - Sisal disc setting

The indented wire is then cut, moulded and joined to create the disc setting. The setting is then hammered into a frame.

THREE - Component production

Depending on the final design, various other components need to be created to make up the final piece of jewelry.  Almost all our components are handmade in-house at the Tintsaba workshop.

FOUR - Polishing by hand

Once the setting and other components have been soldered together, the silver is then polished. The item is then assessed for durability and finish.

FIVE - Loading the sisal

The last stage of the silver production is the loading of the Gallery Grade sisal disc. As each frame and sisal disc is handmade, they have to be carefully crafted to fit the the frame. This is because no glue is used.
